Paint fails in two different ways, and the job looks different depending on which one brought the vehicle in. A single panel — a hood, a door, a bumper cover — can fade, chip or get scuffed while the rest of the car still looks fine, and that panel gets painted on its own, blended into the surrounding color so the difference doesn't show. A full repaint is a different job entirely: every panel gets stripped down and refinished together, so the color reads the same across the whole vehicle instead of panel by panel.

Either way, the steps are the same before the spray gun ever comes out. A dark green Mustang convertible that came through the shop is a good example of the masking stage — the hood taped off in sharp, clean lines so only the surface being painted gets sprayed, with the trim, glass and everything around it protected. That same masking and prep work happens whether it's one panel or the whole car, because the paint only looks right if what's underneath it was sanded, primed and covered correctly first.

Painting starts with sanding the surface to give the new paint something to hold onto, whether that's a small area around a repair or the whole body of the vehicle. Anything not being painted gets masked off with tape and paper — trim, glass, mirrors, badges — so the overspray stays exactly where it belongs. Primer goes down first and gets sanded smooth, then color goes on in even coats until it matches the rest of the vehicle, followed by a clear coat that gives it the same finish as the paint around it. On a single-panel job, the edges get blended into the neighboring panels so there's no visible line where the new paint stops.
